So I really feel like i'm fighting with my art lately. I'm not enjoying it like I used to and i feel like I spend more time creating vector shapes than anything else. I decided to try a process that was a bit more organic and less "digital," so here's the result! I have to say...I had a blast working on this. I didn't even take the time to sketch anything out, I just dove into Photoshop with some textured brushes and this was what happened. I hope you enjoy it!

The Adventures of Freddy Freeman

With all the talk of the Captain Marvel reboot DC is planning i felt like drawing Captain Marvel Jr. (or is it Shazam Jr. now?). Since i've always loved Freddy's color scheme, i thought i'd take a stab at him, in a more kid-friendly style.

Weapon 11

So it was my turn to pick the next weapon in the Epic Armory series, and i decided to go with the lightsaber (i chose Luke's orginal one). Make sure to check out the others over on dribbble.

Final Fantasy Sword

Today's illustration is another one for the Epic Armory project over on dribbble. I decided to do this one before i did any of the other old ones since the other guys all did there version of it. I've never been a huge Final Fantasy guy, but i've always loved this sword!

Set Phasers to Fun

This is actually yesterday's illustration, but i didn't get a chance to post it until it was too late. This is part of the Epic Armory series that i'm doing with some guys over at dribbble.com. Rogie King and Tim Boelaars spearheaded this thing and Nick Slater and I just joined up. I'll be doing a few more of the older ones and then the Final Fantasy sword they just posted, so stay tuned!

Buzz Lightyear

Of course, if you draw Woody, you need to draw his pal Buzz.

Sheriff Woody

Well, since I missed the past few days due to my workload, I decided to do a more detailed piece for today's illustration. It's a lot different then the others, but I felt like experimenting a bit. I hope you enjoy it!

Harvey Birdman

Another 70's cartoon superhero/Adult Swim character, Alex Toth's Birdman. I know Harvey isn't his name from the old series, but it's such a funny first name for him that I had to include it.

Space Ghost

One of the coolest superhero costumes of all-time! Alex Toth was a genius.

The Pet Professional

Way back around 2004, while reading Scott Kurtz's webcomic PVP (pvponline.com), I noticed a blog post asking for artists' to submit their work for a comic that Scott's friend, was trying to get started. I decided to send them some samples even though I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get picked. To my surpise, I got an email from Scott and he told me that his friend, Jason Salsbury, really liked my work and wanted me to be the artist for the comic.

Needless to say, I was ecstatic! I was currently going to school full-time and the only art I had been doing was a bi-weekly comic for the college paper. I wanted to get my work out there and this was just the opportunity I was looking for (especially since Scott was helping to spread the word about it).

So eventually I got a call from Jason and he told me what the comic was about (up to this point I had completely forgot to ask what it was i'd be drawing). It turned out that it was a comic called Pet Professional about a hitman who only takes contracts on pets. Upon hearing that, I definitely had my reservations since I wasn't sure if a comic about killing animals was how I wanted to get my name out there.

However, after talking to Jason a bit more, it became apparent that it was going to be very light-hearted and wasn't meant to offend pet lovers (well, for the most part;). Besides, the pets who were getting knocked off always had it coming. Like the mobster's bully-of-a-bulldog who had early assaulted a young boy's poor defenseless dachshund.

See? They had it coming.

Anyway, to get to the point. My time with Pet Professional may have been brief (I was only with the comic for a little over a year when I decided to move on) but it made me realize how much potential there was in putting my work out there on the internet for everyone to see. The fans (yes there WERE fans) showed me the joy of sharing my work with more than just friends and family.

So for today's illustration, here is the Pet Professional. I've also included a few of my favorite panels from the series in terms of art quality. Thanks for the good times, Jason!

Doctor Who

After talking with my buddy Chris (thebeastisback.com), I decided to try my hand at Doctor Who.

Now I have to be honest, when it comes to Doctor Who, I know next to nothing about it. I know the basics, like the police box (Tardis?), the time traveling and the weird robots. The only other thing I knew was that I preferred the crazy-looking Doctor with the multi-colored scarf and silly hair (who after research I found out was the 4th and longest running Doctor of the series). But that's about it.

So that's who I decided to draw.

I've never really been able to get into Doctor Who (despite the urgings of my older sister) but after reading about it, especially the older series, I might have to give it another shot.

"Dead or alive, you're coming with me!"

Right when i was ready to post this yesterday, the internet went down and only just came back on. So here is Day 7.

For today's illustration I went with Omni-Man from the Invincible comic by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley. It's hands down the best comic out there and I have a blast reading each issue (or trade in my case since there are no comic book shops around here). If you haven't read it, I definitely recommend you pick it up!

The Amazing Spider-Man (TV series)

When I was a kid, I remember flipping through the channels and stumbling across the live-action Spider-Man series. Although it wasn't on much (it was just the occasional rerun since it was the 80's) it had a huge impact on me (along with the Hulk tv show). Seeing a real live Spider-Man in action was just amazing. So amazing in fact, that I begged my mom to make me a Spidey costume (which she did!).

So here's my tribute to that slighty weird, not-quite-right, but-no-less-cooler, version of Spider-Man's costume.

Sergeant Murphy and the Case of the Stolen Motorcycle

Today's illustration is based on my favorite character from Richard Scarry's Busytown, Sergeant Murphy. As a kid I had this awesome little toy figure of Sgt. Murphy (which unbeknownst to me at the time came from a set called Puzzle Town). He came with a cool red motorcyle that had a sidecar attached to it where his wife could sit.

If only they still made toys as cool as they used too...

Mr. Incredible and Jack-Jack

The Incredibles is by far my favorite Pixar movie and since I've never done any fan art for it I thought I would draw Mr. Incredible and his son Jack-Jack for today's illustration. Enjoy!

Raccoon Mario

For today's illustration i decided to go with Raccoon Mario. Even though Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite of the original trilogy, i can't deny the greatness that is Super Mario Bros. 3. All of the new power suits were just too awesome with my favorite being the elusive Tanooki suit.

I would scour the levels looking for that tiny little bear/raccoon/whatever-the-heck-it-was suit, eventually find one and then of course accidentally run into an enemy before i got the chance to turn into a statue...*sigh.*

At least you could always count on the good ol' Super Leaf. It might have been a poor-man's Tanooki suit but at least you could still fly.

And i decided to give Mario a little wrench (who i affectionately refer to as Wrenchie), since I was always disappointed that there wasn't a wrench weapon in any of the games.

Happy New Year and a New Daily Project

First off, Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holiday season! 2011 was a great year and I have a feeling 2012 is going to be even better.

One thing I'd like to be better at this year is updating this site. I definitely haven't been living up to the title of this blog! Work has been keeping me incredibly busy so i haven't had much time to do any personal work but the good news is that i have a little bit of free time at the moment so i'm going to start another monthly illustration-a-day project for the month of January.

Since yesterday was a holiday and i wanted to spend time with my family, i'll be starting it today. Instead of a theme like March of the Monsters, this time around it's just going to be a random character each day. This way i'll be able to keep it interesting and not get too bored (which happens often). I'm still planning on rendering all of the 30 Rock Characters so i may slip them into this project.

Starting us off today is the invincible Iron Man. Enjoy!
